ican'tpretend*
love, i have wounds only you can mend, you can mend. i guess that's love, i can't pretend, i can't pretend. oh feel our bodies grow and our souls they blend. yeah love i hope you know how much my heart depends,,
Life after the accident was an adjustment, there was no denying that for Kenzie. Most of her first nights home consisted of nightmares, waking up in a cold sweat, screaming for her children, for Cedric. Her mind wasn't letting her forget the terror of the wreck, no matter how desperately she needed to. The doctors had warned her in advance that PTSD was common after traumatic events like this. Even driving to and from work was a struggle at first, and though Cedric offered to get her wherever she needed to go, Kenzie was pushing herself not to need any help. She wanted her life back, control of her mind back, and she would do whatever it took for that to happen. She'd survived, her whole family was alive, She needed to be strong, to be a mother. Bryce didn't need to see his mom have panic attacks or hear her waking up in the middle of the night.
And she had gotten better, or at least, she was making progress. Kenzie pulled her long red hair out of its ponytail, letting it fall in light waves as she straightened up the nursery. Rayna was sleeping soundly in her crib, just over a year old now. It amazed Kenzie, how far their little girl had come. While Kenzie was comatose, Rayna was born dangerously early. Cedric stayed at both of their sides through the ordeal, the two months Kenzie was unresponsive and Rayna's life was in limbo. The strength Cedric must have had during that time was stunning to her. She hated that he'd had to go through all of that pain, all that wondering.
She shook her head faintly, gently rubbing Rayna's back as she slept. Their family was pulling itself back together again, and Kenzie herself had recently found out that it would be growing a little bit larger. Her hand fell to her stomach, still too small to be showing yet. She'd only just got the confirmation from the doctor that she was about a month pregnant, and once the shock wore off, Kenzie was ecstatic. She'd been debating how she would tell Cedric for a couple days now, but she'd finally settled on a hopefully discrete method. A new shirt for Rayna was laying on their bed for when Cedric came home, the words across the front reading "oops! they did it again, i'm gonna be a big sister." It was similar to how she'd told Cedric and Bryce about Rayna - it seemed fitting to continue the tradition.
Rayna stirred at her mom's touch, Kenzie smiling softly down at her. "Hey pretty girl," she said softly. "You're gonna be a big sister." Her smile grew a bit as she pulled her hand away, moving and finishing picking up a couple of toys. Bryce had a playdate with one of the neighbors, and the house was uncomfortably quiet without him running around while Cedric was at work. Lately Cedric had been working a lot of later hours, a pattern that usually kept Kenzie on edge. It wasn't exactly a secret that the undercover street racing work had her feeling more than a little anxious for her husband.
She tried not to make too much of a fuss, but it was hard for her not to panic. Typically she couldn't fall asleep until she knew he'd made it home safe. Kenzie sighed, softly closing Rayna's door behind her as she made her way downstairs, pulling out her phone and sending Cedric a text. "what time do you think you'll be home? i have a surprise(:" she smiled a bit as she sent the message. Their family was okay - hell, their family was only getting bigger. And she couldn't wait to see the look on Cedric's face when he found out.
