we've got no money*
but we've got heart. we're gonna rattle this ghost town. this house is falling apart,,
Caleb was shocked to find himself back on campus, to say the very least. As someone who struggled in school for most of his life - or his entire life, if he was being completely honest - he swore that once he was done he'd walk away for good, no looking back, no stepping foot near the place again. Caleb had graduated from the university that previous spring, alongside his closest friends, and started working at the veterinary clinic nearby as a full time job instead of just a school internship. He was an actual, real world adult now. For the past few years, the scariest thing in his life had been becoming a teenage werewolf. Caleb thought his life was over the night his brother bit him. He thought he lost himself, thought he'd become a monster, and that feeling still sort of lingered even years later, when he'd finally gained some control of himself. But the road to control was a long one, one that included biting and turning his best friend Bennett, and losing his girlfriend Maya in the process, not that he blamed her for breaking up with him after that whole mess.
But things were turned around again, were actually okay again. He and Maya were happily raising their two girls together, and Bennett still came around to see them and his nieces. His control was getting better - he knew how to keep himself locked up and far away from his family on full moon nights, and knew how to control his temper and strength every other day. He had to. He was responsible for more than just himself now - he had his twin daughters to worry about, had Maya to worry about. Caleb wouldn't let the monster he could potentially be ever, ever hurt them. Hurting them would destroy the lycan. He'd never asked for this, had been forced into it by an older half brother who wanted revenge. But he was managing it as best he could. It was harder without Bennett constantly by his side. The two had been partners in crime through everything in his life, but he respected that his friend needed to go off and do his own thing.
And facing university again definitely would have been easier with the help of him.
Okay, so it was one class, but it was still frustrating nonetheless. The university had waited until after Caleb walked for his graduation ceremony to let him know that he still needed one more math credit to actually get his degree. So he'd be attempting to finish that during the summer, much to his annoyance. After spending most of the afternoon in the adviser's office going over potential class options for him he was wandering the campus, remembering all the trouble he and his best friend had caused in their years there. A small smile tugged at his lips, shrugging his bag onto his shoulder as he let out a sigh. Well, he wasn't a complete real world adult yet, but he was basically there. Once he finished this credit, he'd basically be done. There weren't as many students around during the summer months, smaller herds of friends sort of filtering about the grounds. Caleb took in a breath, blinking when he recognized a familiar scent nearby.
He glanced around until his eyes landed on the source, smiling faintly when he saw Phoebe walking nearby. How many times had Bennett rambled on and on about that girl? His friend had been head over heels in puppy love when it came to Phoebe, and while Caleb had been weary of the girl at first, it was pretty clear now that she was harmless. He hadn't seen her often since Bennett's departure, though, and a part of him felt bad for that. He bit his lip, hesitating before he quickened his pace to catch up to her. "Hey, Phoebe!" he called, slowing when he reached her side and offering her a small smile. "I ... hi, long time no see." He shrugged his bag back up again, rubbing his neck as he looked at her. "How've you been?" Even if Bennett was gone, he still wanted to be friends with Phoebe. He didn't have many people he could trust himself around anymore, and after spending so much time snooping for Bennett's sake, he owed this girl some kindness.
