Controlling his lycan side had been a struggle for Caleb since the beginning. Hell, the lack of control partnered with a heightened temper was the reason he bit his best friend in the first place. But with his days as a "teen wolf" now far behind him, he liked to think he was getting better when it came to control. At least partially, though, he knew he needed to contribute that to the new life he and Maya were now living. It was during their breakup when Caleb and Maya discovered they were going to become parents - that surprise quite literally doubled at the discovery that they were going to be having twins. Of course, the lycan was initially terrified when he heard the news - he was still a student in college, didn't have much money, and didn't know where he and Maya really stood at the time.
But the two of them worked it out, and Caleb was determined to make sure he never lost her again. The months of their breakup felt like agony to him - something about her made it impossible for him to let her go, no matter how hard he tried to do just that. But he and Maya found their way back to each other during her pregnancy, and together they welcomed two baby girls into the world. The moment Caleb's eyes landed on Caelena and Melissa, their daughters ... He knew he'd never love another human being more than he loved those two. Everything just felt lighter when he looked at their little family, and he knew he would dedicate the rest of his life to making them happy, to making them feel safe and loved. He wouldn't be like his father, wouldn't decide one day that it was time to turn his back on his family. He couldn't even imagine leaving his girls, couldn't fathom how any parent ever would.
His father - shit - his father was how he wound up in his current situation.
Everything felt like a blur. One minute he was visiting his mom, having stopped by her place after work to see how she was doing. She was getting ready for a date, not that that bothered him in the slightest. It was about time his mom was able to try and be happy again. It was who she was trying to be happy with that filled Caleb with a sudden rage. His father was back in town, and he wanted to see her, wanted to see both of them. He could try and blame it on the approaching full moon, but in reality just the thought of his dad going anywhere near his mom again made him see red. The next thing Caleb knew his eyes turned into the color of liquid goals, his claws extending with the beginning of a shift as his wolf fangs began to protrude. He didn't complete the shift during his fit of rage, but only because of his mother. Only because she screamed. He was brought back to the night he turned Bennett, the way he screamed when Caleb bit him ... And it was then that he was able to snap out of it, fangs and claws retracting as his eyes returned to their normal dark shade of brown.
When he finally looked at his mother, she was sobbing and shaking on the floor. He didn't blame her in the slightest for jerking away from him when he reached out to her, and without a word Caleb could only do what his initial instinct told him to do - he fled. He ran home as fast as his wolf speed would carry him, bursting in the door and trying to catch his breath, not from the running but from the panic that what he'd just done caused. He'd almost attacked his mother, almost bit her ... And she hadn't even known what he was in the past. Caleb's fists clenched at his sides as he sort of sank to the floor, breathing deeply through his nose and out through his mouth. He counted to five between the breaths, his body steadying as he gave himself a few moments before he pulled himself to his feet. Somehow he knew exactly where he needed to go, climbing the stairs of their home and walking into the twins' bedroom. His rapidly beating heart slowed instantly at the sight of them and he hesitated in the doorway only momentarily before he made his way to Melissa's crib.
Lena still slept soundly as Caleb picked up the wide-eyed Melissa. The baby coo'd softly in his arms, Caleb holding her carefully, wishing more than anything that his arms could be a fortress. Very gently he kissed her forehead, Melissa breaking out in a wide smile that brought tears to his eyes. Yeah, he'd really needed this. Caleb moved to hold her so her head was snuggled into his shoulder and chest, swaying a bit with her to soothe her back to sleep. "Shhh sleepy girl, don't wake your sister," he said softly, blinking away the tears as he held her. Caleb bit down on his lip. "You two will always be safe with me, okay? I'm never going to let anyone hurt you." And he'd never let himself be the one to hurt them either. Melissa yawned, her dark eyes so similar to his slowly fluttering closed, but Caleb wasn't ready to put her down. He just needed a minute with her.
