I THINK THERE'S A FLAW IN MY CODE
for centuries, enzo's time was spent searching. not a day was wasted, no time misplaced. in the beginning, his ventures were only made up of leads. one clue would bring the man to a new location, following a trail that never proved to be of use. eventually, enzo succumbed to the darkness which lingered beneath his surface, willingly giving into his insatiable need for revenge. his actions were cruel, most of which had very little to do with finding his beloved wife. see, the man quite enjoyed being a pirate. when floriana was first taken, enzo left england immediately, giving up the claim to his kingly title. he didn't care about nobility anymore, not after everything that had been taken from him. if anything, enzo placed blame upon those who sat in thrones. he was an outlaw, a captain feared among many. the donati name fearfully whispered throughout towns, even more so when it came to other crews. oh, he was not a man to be crossed.
despite his cruel nature, enzo still possessed a heart. though its beat was taken, he continued to feel. that was the problem. when his daughters chose to go their separate ways, he did nothing but stand by and allow it. after all, they were donati's, they were his children. there was no doubt in enzo's mind that the triplets were more than capable of taking care of themselves, perhaps even better than he ever could. it was a dark time in his life, one that he was rather pleased the girls weren't exposed to. besides, he was careful to keep an eye on them, knowing their locations. though he was apart from the three, he knew they were safe. that's all that mattered. however, in the absence of his children, it made it all the easier to allow those demons inside. perhaps if enzo had chosen a different course... things may have landed in his favor. instead, he continued to make mistakes, leaving the man with a guilty conscience. all the lives lost... take by his own hand... there was no coming back from that bloodshed. no hope for redemption.
the boy he saved from drowning. the boy he pulled aboard his ship... that was one regret he could never shake. the kid started off as a cabin boy, being forced to run around for enzo's crew, doing whatever asked of him. in other words: that young boy was a slave. however, something eventually sparked within enzo, viewing the child in a different sort of light. in a way, he reminded the man of his daughters, the fire that they possessed. the boy had a habit of talking back, even daring to pull a sword on enzo. of course, the captain could all but laugh it off. if it were anyone else, enzo would have killed them on the spot. but no, not this child. instead, he began teaching the boy how to navigate, letting him steer the mighty ship on occasion. there was a bond formed... even so, enzo wasn't strong enough to decline the offer made. it started as a treacherous take-over, canons firing against the wooden frame. however, a deal was tossed into the mixture. they wanted the boy, though enzo had no idea why. in return? they would give him dexter's location. he may have been hesitant at first, but in the end he chose to abandon the boy.
finding floriana was like a breath of fresh air, though that didn't mean that his seach was over. no, it was merely the beginning. so long as dexter lived, his family would never be safe. the last encounter he had with the vampire, it resulted in the loss of his hand. enzo wasn't going to risk another failure, not while so much hung in the balance. preparations needed to be made, changes... the man knew what he had to do, and that's what scared him. not only would he be going back to his old ways, but he was willingly giving up the right to his soul. what other options did he have? the choice was already made, having discussed it slightly with flora. he made her promise... promise to end him if things went too far. god only knows just how deep into the darkness enzo would fall. there would come a point when not even his own blood could be capable of bringing him back, though he failed to reveal that to floriana. she didn't know of his cruelty... none of them did. the man was never a hero, not in his story. enzo donati was the villain.
preparing himself meant doing what enzo did best: drink. he was enjoying a night of freedom, a night attempting to cast away the worries which plagued him. it proved difficult, but with every glass of rum downed, no longer was he drowning. sitting at the bar, enzo kept his left arm hidden, being that he had forgotten to replace his hook with a fake hand. again, the alcohol left him with very little worry of exposing himself, or the weapon most would see his little attachment as. glossy orbs drifted toward the bartender, hearing the mentioning of a cab. quirking a brow, enzo's expression shifted into confusion. "one of those metal contraptions on wheels?" chuckling at the thought, he merely shook his head. "i'm a pirate, mate. i have a perfectly good ship awaiting me at the port." of course, his words caused the bartender to give off a weary stare, pegging enzo as just another drunken idiot. "you know, they don't make taverns like they used to. i haven't seen a single fight break out in the entirety of my being here. it's quite disappointing." pushing the empty glass back toward the man, he motioned for another drink.
leaning back slightly, enzo was quick to catch himself before falling off of the bar-stool. hand reached for the counter, his other instinctively raising. immediately noticing the hook, the bartender took a step back. glancing down, enzo couldn't help but let out an amused chuckle. "you look as if you've never seen a hook before." leaning forward onto the counter, a smirk pressed to his lips. "it took a little time getting used to, but i think it's since grown on me. well, save for the times i scratched an itch with the wrong hand. now that, i can assure you, hurts like hell." enzo was completely unaware of the security approaching, not that he would have cared either way. he had taken on much bigger fellows in his time, this would prove to be no issue.
