It was clear early on in his life that things weren’t meant to work out for him. He never wanted this immortal life, it wasn’t meant for him. Joel became a monster and because of that, he killed the only woman he had ever loved. He killed his wife, the one that he wanted to have kids with, raise a family with. All it took was a small cut when his girl was making supper that made him snap. He could still remember the feral noise that he made when he bit into her neck, he could still remember how she screamed, fought against him, trying to get him off of her. Joel hated himself for what he did. He burned his house down, faked his death and fled.
It wasn’t until recently that Joel had been able to find a way to be happy again. The death of Benny shook him, mostly because Benny was a good kid. He had a good heart and he couldn’t figure out why anyone would want to hurt the kid. When he met Adrianna though, everything changed. Joel found himself looking forward to seeing this girl again. And good lord, when he saw her at the police ball in that stunning number. Had he still had a beating heart, it would have stopped. The breath in his throat was caught and for a moment, he thought that he had seen a glimpse of what heaven may have looked like. He had never been so captivated by a woman since his wife and that was nearly eighty years ago. Joel wanted to protect her, he wanted to be with her and slowly, he found himself falling in love with her.
Never thinking that he would ever be able to open up again or that he would love again, Joel found himself looking forward to seeing her every day. He even went as far as to ask her to live with him and partake in whatever adventures he may be going on. Honestly, the idea of living without her was one that he didn’t like. Now, well now Joel would be a father. He never thought that would happen. Before he brutally murdered his wife, before he was a vampire, Joel had wanted to be a parent. He and his wife had been trying for a baby, they wanted a big family. Joel was stunned when he found out and he didn’t even find out before Ade did. Perks to being a vampire is the hearing, which meant that even though she didn’t know, Joel could hear the baby’s heartbeat. It was sort of surreal to be perfectly honest, but it gave him more things to worry about. He would know first if the baby didn’t make it, he would hear the heart no longer beat.
Days off were never days off that often for him. He was always running around and doing things, but he had decided to take the day to himself. It meant that he would spent all day out on the beach, drawing to his heart’s content. He loved to be able to be out in the open world, to feel the sun on his face without it literally burning off. His ring was one of the few things that made him feel normal, like he belonged. Sometimes he forgot what kind of monster he was, he didn’t like to dwell on the fact that he had killed people. Joel let out a breath as he looked up from his sketch book, checking the time and then decided to head back home for the day.
He could hear someone in the house and assumed it was Adrianne home early from work, not thinking much of it. “Ade? You ho-” Joel was cut off as a bullet flew out of the gun of a hunter and into his chest. His breath taken away from the impact. He didn’t have much time to think as the hunter shot into his chest again, sending Joel to the floor. The hunter kept pulling the trigger, unloading his mag into Joel’s body. Joel’s eyes darkened, his fangs emerged as the hunter got closer. A stake in his hand but he missed, getting Joel in the stomach. He let out a cry in pain as he pulled it out, blood dripping from the stake and his wound. The hunter managed to shove another one into Joel’s chest, missing his heart. Joel flung the stake in his hand, grazing the hunter’s side before he fled. Joel was left laying on the ground in a pool of blood, the stake that was in his chest laid next to him on the floor. The pain still shooting through him thanks to the wooden bullets in his chest.
And to think that today had been a good one too.

foundeachother* so bright the flames burned in our hearts that we found each other in the dark. like beasts out in the wilderness we are fighting to survive and convalesce. and we're gonna live, we're gonna live, we're gonna live,, Adrianna knew her days at the station were numbered, or at least her days being in the field were. The baby was growing much more rapidly than any mortal baby would have, but that apparently came with the territory of having a half vampire baby. It felt like only yesterday that Joel told her she was pregnant - she definitely hadn't expected that her boyfriend would be the one to tell her she was pregnant, as it usually happened the other way around. She hadn't expected any of this, in all honesty, but as time went by Adrianna knew she wouldn't have her life be any other way. For the first time in a long time she was truly happy again, and Joel ... Joel was the reason for that.
There was no one else she'd rather be taking this adventure with, this adventure that parenthood would surely bring, and she planned to follow him in any other adventures the two might face. No one else brought out her smile so easily - no one else could make her set aside her work for five minutes either. Joel brought out the best in her in every way, and even though the thought of being a mother still terrified her he eased every worry she had. She didn't think Joel even realized what a source of strength he'd become for her, and part of her wondered if he ever would. Even the first day they'd met he denied being a hero, even after he helped her the way he had. He was still a hero to her, and Ade didn't doubt that he always would be. She was falling in love again, and it showed.
She sighed as she sat at her desk, a restless itch already beginning to take hold of her. Adrianna was someone who had to be on the go, whether it be with work or with life in general. She didn't handle sitting still well, and that included being stuck at a desk. But now that her boss knew she was pregnant Adrianna spent most days stuck behind a desk at the station. Paperwork, taking calls ... She'd only been trapped in the routine for a few days, but she could already feel herself going completely mad. For now it was just the transition period - she'd be able to spend most days in the field, but still needed to "learn the ropes so she wouldn't be thrown into the routine headfirst." She'd had to resist rolling her eyes at her boss's reasoning. She liked keeping busy, but not this kind of busy. Her eyes constantly flickered back to the clock until the moment her shift ended. Ade was quick to jump to her feet, striding out of the station for the day after saying her goodbyes.
A smile tugged at her lips as she got in her car, one hand going to the small bump that had formed beneath her shirt. "The sooner you get here, the better," she said, her voice teasing and warm as she talked to the little bump. Hey, it wasn't just for the sake of getting out a desk work. Even though the fear was still there - it probably would remain even after the baby was born, at least that was what her mom told her - she was getting anxious just to meet the baby, to hold it for the first time. Her mind remained stuck on that thought as she drove home, the smile remaining still, but it faded only as she pulled into the driveway. Instantly Adrianna found herself on high alert, her eyes glued to the doorway, noticing it was cracked open.
She wouldn't think anything of it normally, but every instinct of hers told her something was wrong. Adrianna chewed softly on her lip, carefully getting out of her car, gun now in hand. As she approached their home she found herself willing Joel to meet her at the door, see her gun in hand and laugh, maybe tease his cop girlfriend for being so paranoid. She let out a slow breath, gently pushing the door. "Joel ...?"
Her eyes landed on bloody footprints first, followed by the sight of Joel himself laying in a pool of his own blood. Adrianna's heart jumped into her throat, the beating of her heart suddenly pounding in her ears. "Joel?!" Ade sprinted over to him, dropping to his side and forcing herself to go into an almost autopilot sort of mode. She saw the stake first, her jaw clenching with a moment of rage. Hunters. The bloody footprints out the door told her that whoever it was had fled, making her feel safe enough to put her gun away, instead surveying the wounds. With the stake removed she knew the stab wounds to his stomach and chest would heal - what she was worried about now were the bullets. She'd need to remove them.
All worry needed to be pushed aside, but it was hard not to be terrified when she looked at his face. "I'm going to get the bullets out, okay?" she said. "Just ... just stay with me." She quickly got back to her feet, rushing to get the first aid kid from the bathroom, only needing the tweezers. She was back at his side in an instant, kneeling beside him as she pulled the tweezers out of the kit. Adrianna bit down on her lip. "This is probably going to hurt," she said, though she'd do her best to make it hurt as little as possible. Under her breath she started to murmur a spell with the hopes that it'd ease Joel's pain and accelerate the healing process, repeating it over and over as she carefully removed the wooden bullets one by one.
But as she used her magic Adrianna felt a strange effect come over her, her head feeling lighter as the dizziness took over. She tried to shake it off, but her breathing took a shift next as it became more ragged, shaky, and from there she knew very well what was happening. Her magic was draining her, but much more quickly than it ever had before. She closed her eyes as she tried to steady her breathing, opening them again to remove the last bullet. Only then did she ease up on the healing spell, sort of not having a choice in the matter regardless. Her hands trembled from the effort that had come from even a simple healing spell, but very gently she moved to push his hair back, looking Joel over with concern clear across her features, making sure he was healing as normal.
"Are you going to need me to stick around as a full-time bodyguard?" she asked half-teasingly, her voice a little breathless. She didn't notice her nose had started to bleed as she drew in a shaky breath, releasing it slowly as she'd learned before. Her focus was on him, one hand over his. Now that she'd stopped using the spell her energy was coming back, though the exhaustion was still clear. Using her free hand she quickly tried to wipe the blood from her nose, her brows furrowed with concern as she looked at Joel.
"Are you okay?"
