thinkin'toomuch*
all these questions they're for real like who would you live for? who would you die for? would you ever kill? oh, oh, i'm fallin' so i'm taking my time on my ride. i been thinkin' too much, help me,,
Lainey could typically tell when she was about to be caught in the riptide of a really, really bad full moon. She'd feel its effects even up to two weeks before the moon reached its fullest point - her emotions would get to the point of nearly going haywire and it became even harder to control her supernatural strength. She tried to distance herself when she could feel the harsher full moons on the horizon, mostly because she didn't want to risk anyone she cared about getting caught in the crossfire. Her family, her friends, Colin ... if she ever did anything to hurt any of them, she'd never be able to forgive herself. Now that she was older the risk of that wasn't as likely, but she still figured it was better to be safe than sorry. Even though there weren't any more secrets, there would always be a danger that came with what she was.
Those were the days she hated what she was more than any other. Not only did she feel more dangerous, like she was a threat to the people closest to her, but they were the days she really noticed how much separated her from them. Lainey chewed her lip as she wiped off the counter at the bar, her shift about to come to a close. Her dark eyes flickered toward the clock on the wall. She’d told Grace to meet her at the bar when her shift was over, both for drinks and later for another lesson in control. Just the thought eased the tension Lainey currently felt. In all honesty, Grace was a Godsend to the young woman. Before her, Lainey had never met anyone who shared her gifts, never met a halfbreed with both lycan and vampire blood running through their veins. A chance meeting at the bar one night turned into a friendship Lainey hoped would last. With Grace’s help she was learning how to control herself, how to keep her abilities at bay and how to cling to even the slightest shred of her humanity during the full moon. Grace helped make her, well, better, and Lainey had no clue how she’d ever be able to repay her friend for that.
She looked up when the manager told her she could clock out after taking out the garbage. Lainey let out a breath of relief at the thought of being done for the night and obliged, grabbing the bags and heading to the dumpster behind the bar. It wasn’t a bad job, working at the bar, but it wasn’t exactly what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. Still, it paid the bills, though she was hoping to move on to teaching at the dance studio full-time eventually instead. Lainey sighed as she tossed the bags into the dumpster, turning around and doing a double-take when she realized she'd been followed. Her eyes narrowed slightly as she studied the man before her, who was watching her with a puzzled, verging on angry expression. Lainey bit her lip, folding her arms over her chest. "Can I help you, sir?"
"What the hell are you?"
Lainey blinked, only at that moment recognizing the man's scent, and the lack of a heartbeat that came from his chest. Vampire. She tilted her head, for now playing the fool. "I'm sorry?" she asked. "I'm a bartender - certainly you could've gathered that from all the drinks I served tonight?" She smiled a bit, but the stranger wasn't amused. He stalked closer to her, as if he were feeling out whether or not she was predator or prey, and Lainey stood her ground as the man loomed over her. The inner wolf was waking up, territorial, defensive, but for now she tried to suppress it. Her efforts at holding it back were short-lived, though, as the man shifted towards her, pushing her against the wall.
"You know what I mean." His words came out as more of a growl, Lainey's heartbeat beginning to speed up. "I can smell it on you. So I'm going to ask nicely one more time: what the hell kind of freak are you?" She tried to remember to breathe - deep in through the nose, out through the mouth, keep calm - but her eyes still flashed a dangerous yellow as she looked up at the vampire. He recoiled only slightly at the sight, but it was enough of a chance for Lainey to roughly shove him away, knocking him back against the dumpsters. Her eyes were still yellow, a warning to the vampire as she flashed her fangs his way for good measure.
"Don't you dare touch me again," she said simply, retracting her fangs and glaring darkly at the vampire. He snarled back at her in response as he stood up against the dumpster, but Lainey saw the trace of fear in her eyes. People feared what they didn't understand, and this wasn't the first time she'd been confronted by someone for the mix of species she was. Usually it was older vampires or lycans - after all, the two species had always been enemies. Her blood was tainted to most of them. Lainey shook her head faintly, her eyes returning to their normal shade of brown as she turned to walk back to the bar. Grace would probably be waiting for her by now.
She heard him growl before he shifted at her again, grabbing her from behind and throwing her into the wall with enough force to cause a tremor inside the building. Lainey yelped, the back of her head sticky with blood, the scent of it filling the air. The vampire pulled her up before she had a moment to steady herself, pinning her to the wall again and baring his fangs in her face, his hand gripping her throat. Her eyes flashed gold once more as she gasped for breath, grabbing his wrist with a force that would crush human bones altogether. While it didn't crush the vampire's bones exactly, it caused him to cry out in pain and release his grip enough for Lainey to catch her breath and let out a shout as she fought against his grip.
"Let me go!"
