These quiet words, they carry me away
Returning
They keep coming back
In idle thoughts and hollow cutaways
Disarm me

Nightfall. The only time when Grace had the ability to be completely alone. She liked the silence, how her thoughts could be presented in quite. Besides, working at the college library-- she felt an immediate connection to the night life. Maybe it was the vampire aspect of herself. After all, vampires tended to be creatures of the night. It brought out the ability to have silent reflections. In the past, she and her brother would wonder out after dark. Even when their parents, had denied that that right. Being sheltered, and protected because of the hunters, vampires, and werewolves searching for them. She had inherited her families enemies. Hell or high water, they would seek the half-breed children out. It brought nothing but a coldness to the hybrid. She wouldn’t be bested by purebloods. I mean, she had a right to exist. It was everything that mattered to her. Freedom, was something that she had gained over time. Something that she wasn’t going to relinquish.
Her eyes carried her to the beach. The tide was just beginning to come in. She work a black shirt, with a pair of navy colored jeans. She walked along the shoreline. Her mind racing with questions. How was her brother doing? She hadn’t received a letter from him in a month. Perhaps, he was just busy. Business at the local bar in New York tended to get busy on late nights like these. After all, her brother was an important man. He had friends now, letting go of that life they lead. Like his sister, neither was afraid to come out of the shadows nowadays. The war between the species had lead to the local police force heightening security within the city limits. It had been a blood bath between the werewolves and vampires. Grace had taken the opportunity to kill those that came after her. Blood was on her hands, and she often left the bodies in an alley.
Crystal blue eyes, scanned the horizon. She was pretty certain that she was completely alone. Grace could handle the loneliness. For the last few centuries, she had managed to take care of herself. She was fairly self sufficient. When she wasn’t spending time at the library, occasionally helping people, she was finding herself in a book. Her collection had grown over time. Hell, she didn’t even bother with modern items. She still read the newspaper. Much of time, she found peace within the pages of a book. She could lose herself to fictional characters. Page after page, of interesting events. Perhaps, in a fundamental way, she yearned to escape the life that she lead.
As the waves came in, she stopped along the shoreline. Sapphire eyes gazing out into the night. The wind blew through her obsidian locks of hair. She wore it down, allowing it to fall at her shoulders. Silently, she sighed and merely stood at the edge of the ocean. All of the things, and places that she had been over the centuries. Was California any different? Would she move onto another place within a couple of years. Suffice to say, she really didn’t have anything worth staying around for. Apart of her longed to find someone else in the same position as her. Hated for being a mixed blood. Hunted by vampires, for having a werewolf temper, and hunted by vampires because she smelled partially like a wolf.
The water came to her feet, and she remained stationary the entire time. It was a cool night, and the smell of the ocean was calming. She felt at home in the darkness. It was beautiful. She loved the nighttime. She always spent the nights wondering around like a phantom in the darkness. She was adapted at surviving. She often fed on willing humans, but tonight wasn’t about feeding, it was about finding herself. Where had she been? Did it matter at all, even in solitude apart of herself longed for companionship. She had met that lycan at the bookstore. The two had started talking, and Grace knew that her heart had gone cold. Once it had been warm, but the ways of the natural world had hardened it. It was even more of a challenge to overcome the obstacles to allow others into her life. Some described her as hollow, without a soul. Grace did have a soul, but it was barricaded behind imaginary ice.
What turned out to be a few minutes, turned into hours of just watching the stars shimmer in the sky. Before long, she found herself sitting on the warm sand. She was finding solace here. It gave her a chance to stop thinking, and reflecting on the past. Her mind fell silent, only the sound of rushing water up and down the shoreline made any sound. It was truly peaceful, something that she needed at this very moment. Life was filled with trials and tribulations, she had mastered most of them. Each time she got close to someone, it was as if they were deliberately taken from her. She’d seen people die, witnessed horrible battled between the species. In certain ways, she felt at war within herself. Divided on many issues. She sighed silently, and allowed for the concerned to slip away into the darkness. She remained silent, allowing herself to slip into the nightfall.
