to the brave*
and the petrified. we all fall down,,
Scout was not someone who was used to needing or asking for help. She'd made a life for herself, a name for herself since she left the darkness of her early life behind. She provided a good life for her son, established herself into the police force and had, albeit against her will, become a damn good hunter. She prided herself on being independent, though she knew deep down that she usually refused help because, truthfully, she didn't feel she deserved any of it. Lately, though, she'd needed all the help in the world just to stay afloat. Her father's escape from prison flipped her world upside down, put the only people she had left to care about in danger because of her, because of where she came from and because she was the one to turn the man in all those years ago. When she got the call from the authorities that Antonio Torres had escaped federal custody, Scout collapsed into a panic attack, nails digging into the palms of her hands as she felt the life she'd so carefully woven together completely unravel beneath her. She of all people knew what that man, monster, was capable of, and she knew no one she cared about was safe from what he could do. The fear Scout felt towards her father overpowered her fear of any supernatural creature she'd faced down.
But she pulled herself together - she had no choice in that matter. Breaking down wasn't going to keep anyone safe, but she needed to let herself lose composure if just for a minute. Once that time was up, though, she dusted herself off and worked out a plan. Her main priority was her son. If nothing else, she would keep Jeremy as far from her father's grasp as possible, and there was one person she knew who could ensure that happened. So she swallowed her pride and asked the woman who blackmailed her into becoming a hunter in the first place, and surprisingly enough Raina was quick to offer her assistance. She opened the doors of her home to Scout and Jeremy, and brought the rest of the hunters in their faction in on it as well. Next thing she knew, Scout and her son were in an over glorified slumber party with her ex-boyfriend, her grandparents, and a small dysfunctional family of hunters. It wasn't the most ideal of living situations, but she knew there was nowhere safer for Jeremy than a house full of hunters.
That left Thomas, who had already gotten more involved in the situation than Scout would have liked, and it nearly ended in him losing his life. Thomas was one of the few genuinely, wholeheartedly just good people Scout knew in this world. And for some reason, he saw some good in her, too, saw someone worth caring about and worth saving. All Scout had seen in herself for a long time was darkness, but Thomas chased some of that away, and that itself was dangerous in her eyes. She would ruin him - a little voice in the back of her head constantly seemed to remind her of that. But she couldn't bring herself to push him away completely, though it wasn't for a lack of trying. He still held onto her, and she found herself holding onto him too. She didn't want to lose him, but if anything else happened to him because of her ... Scout didn't think she'd be able to forgive herself. Part of her considered going after her dad on her own, considered leaving without a trace with her loved ones safely behind her until she cleaned up this mess on her own, one way or another.
Her eyes landed on Jeremy, sound asleep in his little cot with his stuffed dog crushed against his chest, and for now that thought was vanquished from her mind. Scout smiled softly down at him, gently brushing his hair back and pressing a kiss to his forehead. Anyone who looked at the two of them knew she loved that kid more than anything else in the world. Even if things didn't work out with Daniel, one pretty amazing thing came out of that relationship, one thing Scout would always be thankful for, and that was their son. Jeremy smiled faintly in his sleep, Scout knowing in her heart that she couldn't leave him behind without an explanation. She chewed softly on her lip, her thoughts broken with a jump when she heard a sound outside, Scout instantly switching to high alert. Jeremy didn't stir, Scout making her way to her room and unlocking the safe with her gun in it, listening more closely. Everyone else in the house seemed to be asleep, going to their separate rooms hours ago. Scout's heart pounded, fearing the worst as she made sure the gun was loaded before she slowly made her way downstairs.
The cabin was pitch black except for a porch light on outside, Scout barely able to make out a shadow of a man on the lawn. Her heart pounded in her ears as she made her way to the front door, listening but not hearing anything. She let out a shaky breath, assuming the worst if only to prepare herself, assuming they'd been found, as she yanked the front door open and pointed the gun ... Only to lower it just seconds later as she let out a breath of relief at who was actually outside.
"Christ," she breathed out, hands no longer trembling, her eyes going from cold determination to gentle as she realized who was at the door. "Sorry, I almost shot you ... again." She grimaced a bit, tucking the gun away. "Do you wanna come in? Gun's gone for the night, promise." She held up her hands innocently, grinning faintly, though her eyes betrayed her exhaustion. She was tired of hiding, tired of living in so much fear that she couldn't even open a door at night without having her gun drawn and ready.
