i think that i might break
nothing made sense anymore. life had quickly become a never-ending puzzle, no two pieces fitting together correctly. there was so much confusion, more so when it came to dexter and the girls she had grown to love as sisters. in a twisted sense, they were a family. fawn had never been exposed to the vampire's sick nature, nor had she endured the torture. in fawn's mind, dexter was simply misunderstood. i mean, if not for the man, she would have perished in the fire that consumed her home. if not for the man, she could have been killed by the hunter's that slaughtered her family. dexter seemed to arrive just in the nick of time, cradling the young girl's body within his arms as he carried fawn out of the burning house. while everyone else saw a monster, she saw opportunity for good. dexter deblane was two completely different people when it came to the girls. they all carried such hatred for him, while fawn was merely caught in the middle. how could she choose one over the other?
somehow, the girl had managed to get separated from the others. they stayed together after the ship incident, which lead them to flee from dexter's grasp. remaining silent for the majority of their travels, fawn refrained from voicing her opinions. it was clear that none of the girls had planned on going back, especially now that wade was watching over them. it seemed like one big game, and the girls were nothing more than a prize. for the longest time, fawn felt at home in dexter's company. the man had granted her with a family, not to mention a safe place for her to reside. his only request was that she shift into her tiger form every so often, to be shown lead before a group of admiring people. they actually paid money to come and see her, strange as that may sound. it never occurred to fawn that she was being seen as a pet, or an object of entertainment. the poor girl's mind had been so brainwashed, she actually viewed dexter as her savior. oh, the man had done quite a number on her, even if she couldn't realize it.
darkness quickly washed over the city, a blackness cloaking the forest entirely. stumbling through the trees, fawn tripped as her dress tangled in with a few loose branches. falling to her knees, palms stained with dirt, she struggled to break the hold. as she tugged, the fabric ripped, a piece still clinging to the branch. despite her current state, fawn cared little about the dress ripping, or the layer of dirt she had acquired during her many stumbles. nothing seemed to matter anymore. the girl was lost, both figuratively and literally. where was she supposed to go? finding her way back to dexter was an option, but that more than likely wouldn't pan out too well for the others, being that he would want them back as well. so, what place did she have in the world, if not by his side? what was the point in fighting, if fawn had no idea what she was fighting for?
gazing down at the ripped fabric, she eventually crawled toward a nearby tree. with her back resting against the bark, fawn pulled her knees to her chest, arms wrapping around them. her entire body was shaking, both wet and cold from the dampness of her surroundings. the girl was so useless, she didn't even know how to make herself a fire. fawn wasn't strong, she wasn't a survivor... not like the others. they knew how to take care of themselves, they were determined. where did that leave her? most of the girls had family, loved ones that they could run to. fawn was alone. she had no one else... nowhere to go, no one to seek out. that alone made the option of finding dexter all the more appealing.
