let it all go*
who says truth is beauty after all? And who says love should break us when we fall? but if we’re strong enough to let it in we’re strong enough to let it go,,
Something was coming and Keegan could feel it.
Maybe it was her magic leaking through, warning her of what was to come. But she felt the same way she had all those years ago, back when she was still a wiccan living amongst pack ranks, right before the turf war began. Her dreams were tainted with bloodshed, and as the nights wore on her dreams only became more vivid. The back of the bookstore where she’d made her home came to life with her screams on a nightly basis. For the first time her visions seemed to be giving her glimpses into the future, and she was terrified. If they were correct, if they weren’t just simply recurring nightmares, war was on its way to San Francisco. Wars between species, wars between packs. Keegan pushed her hair back as she restocked the shelves of the bookstore, letting out a slow, shaky breath. Without fail, her visions always ended with Kato.
She’d witnessed visions of him from before, but past visions, visions of gladiators and siblings ripped from each other’s grasps. After Keegan first stumbled across Kato on Alcatraz, her initial impression of him was that he was, well, an asshole. Dangerous certainly, but not a danger to her—every instinct told her he wasn’t going to hurt her, and he didn’t. She made it off the island unscathed, and from there she kept on coming back. She couldn’t help but be drawn to him, and maybe it was because over time she was able to see through the tough guy attitude. But the more glimpses of Kato’s past Keegan saw, the more she’d started to understand what had shaped him. At the end of the day, she saw a good man overall. A good man who horrible things had happened to over time.
And that was why she stuck to him like a thorn in his side. Keegan saw good in him, whether he wanted to believe that or not. And she wanted him to see that good, too. Before it was too late. The last time Keegan had made her way to Alcatraz to pay the lycan a visit, she discovered something that made her heart freeze up with fear. He’d left the pack. The domino effect was beginning to topple, and Keegan feared where it was going to lead next. She’d spent the past two days attempting to track Kato down, by scent and by asking other lycans who wandered into her and Catriona’s supernatural safe house. As she finished restocking the shelves Keegan’s eyes flickered to the clock of the bookstore. Her shift for the day was coming to a close, and just as she had before she knew what she was going to spend her off time trying to do.
“Cat?” she called out. “I’m heading out for a bit – I’ve got my phone so just let me know if you need me to pick anything up!”
Cat responded with the typical “be safe!” lecture before Keegan scurried out the door, her path taking her back towards the Muir Woods. She didn’t know where to look, didn’t even know where to start, but she knew she needed to find him. It wasn’t just to figure out where the hell his head was at, though. Keegan couldn’t help but miss him. As much of a hardass as he was, as much as she certainly annoyed him, Keegan liked being around Kato. It wasn’t hard for her to get attached to people – maybe it was because she’d lost every scrap of family she had in the past, from her coven to her pack. But Keegan hungered for that sense of belonging again, and something about Kato really woke that part of her right back up.
Keegan drew in a breath as she wandered deeper into the forest, breathing in the scents of her surroundings. The hairs on the back of her neck stood up at the scent of people nearby, people accompanied by the familiar smell of wolfsbane. In case she was close to stumbling upon a group of hunters she rapidly changed her path, heading instead towards a more unfamiliar portion of the woods, trees and shrubs growing denser around he. Keegan bit down on her lip as she stepped carefully over the debris of the forest, letting out a frustrated sigh. “Where the hell are you, asshat?” she muttered to herself, though there was a clear trace of both affection and worry in her voice.
Then she heard the snap.
She heard the snap before she felt the pain, metal closing around and through her leg and clamping shut. Keegan couldn’t hold back her scream as she fell, her leg trapped in what looked like a bear trap at a glance. But the silver of the trap burned her skin, and Keegan knew she was caught in a hunter’s trap. She grit her teeth together as she gripped the trap, trying and failing to pull it apart. Blood gushed through the wound, the searing pain running up her leg. Her hands trembled from the pain, tears welling in her eyes as she struggled to break through the silver. Keegan’s eyes flashed a bright yellow, listening to the footsteps approaching and feeling her heart start to race in her chest.
If it was the hunter, well, it was safe to say she was screwed.
